Our Sustainability Program

Hand in hand with our commitment to providing an exceptional guest experience is our commitment to doing so in an ecologically and socially responsible way. We know preserving our planet is important to you too, and our aim is to be one of the most eco-conscious inns in the Collingwood tourism area. Our eco-friendly approach to bed and breakfast lodging encompasses an effort to minimize overall environmental impact and engage with the local community as much as possible.

Avoiding Plastics

You won't find any single-use plastics at Craigleith Manor Bed & Breakfast: only reusable dishes, silverware, glasses and mugs are used throughout the B&B. Reusable glass water jugs are available in your suite and refillable 24 hours daily with award-winning water from the town of Blue Mountains. Shampoos, soaps and toiletry products in your ensuite are dispensed in sanitized, refillable bottles.

Green Cleaning Practices

All our cleaning and laundry products contain safe ingredients for the environment, with no artificial fragrances, chlorine or harmful additives and chemicals. Our linens are professionally cleaned by a local wet cleaner that uses no harsh chemicals that can harm the environment. And they smell fresh and clean, with no perfumes.

Conserving Water and Energy

To minimize our energy and water consumption, the B&B is equipped with an energy-efficient HVAC system with in-suite temperature controls, energy-smart appliances and LED light fixtures, and dual-flush toilets. While you're with us, we'll gladly clean your suite and replace your towels on request; otherwise, we'll conserve the resources and respect your privacy. Outdoors, we water our lawns and gardens wisely, at off-peak times and only when necessary. Drought-resistant native plants and ground cover in the gardens also reduce overall water requirements and the need for pesticides and fertilizers. For those who drive an EV, we have a charging station readily available.

Shopping Local

Because of our prime location in one of Ontario's most significant agricultural regions, we're able to source many of our delicious daily breakfast menu ingredients through amazing local farms and growers, avoiding unnecessary carbon emissions from trucking. In doing so, we create our menus highlighting the freshest vegetables, fruit, grains, and dairy products available each season.

Sustainable Procurement

Responsible product sourcing is a key element in every hospitality business and an ever-evolving effort. Throughout our operation, we choose brands that have a track record of sustainable responsibility. We opt for high-quality furniture and appliances with long lifespans and prioritize products made from recycled or reclaimed materials. We choose biodegradable, non-toxic products in sustainable packaging as much as possible and avoid goods that contain toxic substances or have human rights issues in the supply chain.

Food Waste

Like the rest of the hospitality industry, we want to avoid wasting food, but there are always scraps. We are active participants in the Simcoe County program to divert compostable waste away from landfills. We often even use our coffee grounds to support sustainable fertilizing practices in our expansive gardens. We also routinely access free compost from the County programs to nourish the gardens.

We recycle all paper, cardboard, plastics, and metal through county-wide waste diversion systems.

Collaborating with Green Organization

We are fortunate to be able to work with the local Bruce-Grey Simcoe Regional Tourism Organization (RTO7), which has been awarded the esteemed GreenStep Sustainable Tourism Destination Certification. RTO7 is a valuable resource as we continue to refine our sustainability practices and as we work to obtain our own Business Sustainability Certification.

Involving Our Guests

We are active participants in Simcoe County's robust recycling program. Recycling bins are readily available in your suite and easy to spot in the butler's pantry. As a guest at Craigleith Manor Bed & Breakfast, please feel free to reuse your in-room towels and robes daily, which we will refresh on request during your stay. We're committed to continuous improvement in our ongoing sustainability efforts and welcome your feedback any time!
